You must have watched a YouTube video, where the creator says something like ‘this video was sponsored by [brand name]’ and maybe sheds more light on the brand in a few seconds. 

As a Creator, the more subscribers you have, the more money you’ll be paid for YouTube Sponsorship, so, if you haven’t already, read my guide on how to get more YouTube Subscribers in 2022. 

In this article, I’ll talk about how Sponsorships work on YouTube in terms of the timeline, setting up a sponsorship, creating the content, getting it reviewed, and getting paid… that’s everything you need to know about YouTube Brand Sponsorships. 

For some of y’all that don’t know anything about YouTube Brand Sponsorships, it is kind of like a Brand that is in the same niche as the content you create pays you to promote their product either via link (not affiliate marketing) or a shout-out. 

It’s by far the best way to make money on YouTube because you get paid per video and most people confuse it with affiliate marketing. 

With Affiliate Marketing, you will get a custom trackable link, if someone clicks on your link and successfully purchases a product or service, then you will get paid, it’s commission-based compared to Sponsorships. 

YouTube Brand Sponsorships can include affiliate Marketing at times but you get paid a flat rate to have a specific ad slot within your content.

How do YouTube Brand Sponsorships Work? 

From the very beginning, either a company is going to you or your manager or you are going to reach out to a company about doing a possible sponsorship. 

It’s preferable if a brand reaches out to you, this is because they already have a budget and they are ready to spend on Influencer Sponsorships. 

These two methods mentioned above are the only 2 ways to get good YouTube Brand Sponsorships, but there are a lot of negotiations and planning to follow suit. 

The Negotiations and Planning Phase 

There’ll be a lot of talking and a lot of negotiations even before the contract is even signed, you’re going to talk about the price, what is included in the price, and what are you going to deliver. 

You just need to figure out what is to be created, how it’s to be created, and how much is going to be charged for all of that as well as what is going to be in the contract. 

No Contract is going to be signed until the entire process and negotiations are done and this is why you should get a management team, just as soon as you’re getting a lot of brand deals, so you can focus on creating content.

Once the negotiations phase is over, you’ll now get a contract, and then it’s time to review and sign. 

Reviewing and Signing the Contract 

As everything has now been decided upon, the contract follows suit, 

During the negotiations phase, you’ll see a contract ahead of time, this is to know if there is anything you want to change, it’s important you review all of your Contract yourself, to make sure it’s what you bargained for. 

As the review process goes on, you can choose to edit any term you’re not comfortable with, this also goes to the brand. 

Once the review process is done, the final contract will be released and signed by both parties, and as that is done, the Content Creation time comes next. 

Creating the Sponsored Content

If you’re a beginner, it may take time for you to adjust depending on the terms of the contract, this is because you’ve probably not done it before. 

You have to come up with a Video Idea and then present it to the company and they have to approve it before you can upload and get paid. 

Depending on the brand, they may ask for several different concepts and they get to choose the one(s) they want to move forward with. 

The key to nailing this phase is to create content in your niche that is in sync with the brand you’re promoting, that way your audience will love it, and most especially, the company will love it. 

Ideally, you’re going to decide on the length of time that the ad is going to be, is it going to be a 30-minute shout-out? Or is it going to be a 4-minute clip within your YouTube Video, this is important for your to know.

Talking Points 

Most times, the brand will give you the talking points, it’s just bullet points they want you to mention about their brand in your content. 

They might also give you points that they don’t want you to mention in the ‘ad’ and that is very helpful when writing your script. 

I’m guessing you know what’s next after writing your script, if you don’t… proceed to shoot and edit your video.

How much should you Charge for YouTube Brand Deals and Sponsorships?

On average, if your videos have high audience retention and engagement rates and you have between 5000 to 10,000 Subscribers, you can charge an average of $300 – $600 per sponsored video. 

Realistically, no brand would want a sponsorship deal with any YouTube Content Creator who has less than 5,000 Subscribers… if you’re in that vast majority, stick to affiliate marketing for the time being. 

How much you charge a brand for a Sponsorship has no standard rate, some use their subscriber count for estimation but I advise you use your views count, that is where the ad will be shown (in your videos). 

You can use a simple formula, (Average Views divided by 1000) multiplied by your CPM. 

So, let’s say your CPM rate is $25, then the average views on your Channel are 10,000, and you should charge $250 for a sponsored video. 

Have trouble getting brand deals? 

Most times, Companies don’t reach out to you even when you have 10,000 Subscribers and it’s not because your content is bad, it’s because they might not even know about your channel because of the increase in competition on YouTube by the second. 

To find Sponsors, YouTube has a special program known as BrandConnect, it’s a monetization service that connects YouTube Content Creators with Brands to create a Sponsorship Campaign.
