When talking about AdSense earnings, there are a couple of metrics that are considered, the CPM (Cost per Mile), the CPC (Cost Per Click), and the CTR (Click Through Rate).
As you should know by now, Google AdSense is a CPC-based ad network, this means that advertisers bid for clicks and you make money when your visitors click on the AdSense ads shown on your site.
For some of us who may have been seeing this metric and don’t know what it is…
What is CTR or Click Through Rate?
CTR or Click Through Rate is given as the percentage of ad impressions that resulted in a click, so if an ad appears 100 times and is clicked 6 times, your CTR will be 6%.
The Formula for CTR is Ad CTR = Ad Clicks ÷ Number of Impressions. The more CTR you have the more money you’ll earn.
As I said earlier, AdSense is a CPC-based ad network and sometimes CPC rates can shoot up to $40… at least that’s the highest I’ve seen from my sites.
Let’s say your CPC rate is $40, then 6 people out of 1000 click on your ad, and your earnings will be $240, you now see why CTR or Click Through Rate is important.
What is a Good CTR on AdSense?
From my point of view, a Click Through Rate of 5% and above should be considered a Good AdSense CTR because you’ll be earning a decent amount of revenue.
A drop in your Site(s) click-through rate can be caused by poor site design, poor ad placements, and poor targeting.
If you’re having Low Click Through Rate on your site, there are a few optimization boxes you need to tick (follow the steps below).
Proven Methods of Improving your Google AdSense CTR (Click Through Rate).
Improving your Google AdSense CTR will improve your revenue significantly but most publishers struggle with this, I’ll now give you my recommendations on how to get the best CTR for your site in 2022.
Active View and Viewability
You need to learn more about this metric by visiting the analytics section in your Google AdSense account.
Active View is a metric that displays how many of your ads are seen by your site’s visitors.
Review the Ad Sizes report and you’ll see the ad sizes that get the most clicks, display them more often in relevant areas.
Compare Platforms
You should compare Platforms in reporting because users who are accessing your site on different devices may have different revenue trends.
When analyzing your reports, click on Platforms so that you can understand what I’m talking about.
If you see a drop in mobile or tablet revenue, it may be as a result of poor ad implementation or mainly because of your site’s layout.
According to Google AdSense, you should note that changing the layout of your site can greatly impact your Click Through Rate.
To tick this box, make sure that your site is Optimized for mobile ad units by using responsive ads throughout and allowing AdSense to adjust the sizes of your ad units.
You can compare ad units within specific platforms by adding platforms as a secondary breakdown in Reports which will provide you with better insights.
Check for Confirmed Click
If your CTR has sharply increased on mobile, your Site may be impacted by Confirmed Clicks.
This is when the AdSense systems have determined that the ads in the impacted sites are generating unintended clicks on mobile.
Google AdSense introduced the Second Click to improve the experience by letting the user confirm that they wish to visit the advertisers landing page.

Ad Implementation
Once you start seeing a drop in your site’s AdSense Click Through Rate, the first thing that should come to mind is reviewing your Ad Implementation.
This entails reviewing the recent changes in Ad Location for your top five ad units, also check your ad code in the case that you may have modified it because this will greatly affect ad serving on your site and therefore, Ad Revenue.
Check for Crawl Errors
Every Publisher should check their sites more often for Crawl Errors, once there is a Crawler issue on a page, the page may cease to show relevant AdSense ads and this may lead to a loss of revenue.
If the AdSense Crawler is having issues crawling your site, the bot will be unable to match relevant ads to your pages and this is what AdSense does best.
If your page is on Football, they show ads for Football fans and help you get better Click Through Rates and more revenue.
